Dear Friends of the Mosaic Institute:
As we approach the end of another busy year, I would like thank you for the contribution you have made to building a stronger, more cohesive Canada and promoting peace around the world through your support of the Mosaic Institute. You have helped to change the course of young people’s lives by encouraging our delivery of peace-focused dialogues, community service projects, and experiential learning opportunities for high schoolers (“Next Generation”), university students (“UofMosaic”) and young adults (“New Beginnings”) with personal or family connections to different sides of international conflicts.
2014 also saw the release of our ground-breaking report entitled The Perception & Reality of “Imported Conflict” in Canada, which almost 3.5 million Canadians either read or heard about through the media. We learned a lot about our collective selves through that project, but one of the most definitive conclusions we drew was that those of us with personal or family connections to violent conflicts overseas are able to “reframe” our understanding of them when we live in Canada. Living in Canada has transformed the way we perceive and relate to the world and to each other.
One young man who had come to Canada from Sri Lanka as a teenager summed it up this way:
The common element of all my friends is that being Canadian is very important to us. Our shared recognition of being Canadian gives us the ground to build on.
Now, as we look forward to another ambitious year of building on that shared experience of being Canadian, I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of the entire Mosaic Institute to wish you and your loved ones a happy and healthy Holiday Season. May 2015 be a year of Peace for all of us.
