2020 Peace Patron Award

title

Please join us for our virtual celebration

The Mosaic Institute is pleased to announce that Margaret MacMillan is now officially our 2020 Peace Patron. This is our highest honour, which we present annually to one person who has made a preeminent contribution to peace and intercultural understanding.

We selected Margaret for her extraordinary work as a historian and author, advancing public understanding of the causes of war and the opportunities for lasting peace. We are immensely grateful to the BMO Financial Group for maintaining its Presenting Sponsorship of our Peace Patron Award. We are equally indebted to our individual supporters and institutions for their support.

As I write this message, protests are convulsing Canada, the United States, and increasing numbers of countries around the world. They are stark reminders of the urgency of Mosaic’s work.

Mosaic’s mission has always been to bring together people at conflict, to discover one another’s shared humanity and common dignity, and to build a better world together. That work is the calling of every human being, both those who cry out for justice and those who hear the cry. It is the mandate of our age.

I thank you for joining hands with us, and helping to make our work possible.

With best wishes, Akaash Maharaj CEO

Phase 1

To respect physical distancing during the pandemic, we are holding her formal investiture online. We hope you will enjoy the videos of the first phase of our 2020 Peace Patron ceremonies (click here to view the videos).

Phase 2

On 16 June 2020, we hosted the second phase of our ceremonies: a live, online fireside conversation with Margaret. We will share a video of this Fireside Chat soon.

CEO of the Mosaic Institute Akaash Maharaj hosted a live, online fireside conversation with 2020 Peace Patron Margaret MacMillan. The overarching theme of the conversation and the Q&A portion of the event was about revolution: the global uprising in support of the Black Lives Matter movement as well as the new dynamics introduced by the COVID-19 pandemic. The urgent need for the society to recognize and stand up to injustice, have open and inclusive dialogues and the implications of the current reconsideration of historic events and figures were among some of the thought-provoking topics covered in the conversation.

With thanks to the Hart House Event Management Team for making Phase 2 of our Peace Patron Award possible.
